1.3 Drug-resistant TB Since 1994, the World Health Organization (WHO) has systematically collected and analysed data on levels of resistance to anti-TB drugs from countries and areas (1).. Drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) disease is caused by TB bacteria that are resistant to at least one of the most effective TB medicines. Health care providers should consult a TB medical expert if drug-resistant TB disease is presumed or confirmed.

Effective Treatment & Diagnosis of Multidrug Resistant TB (MDRTB)
Patients with multidrug-resistant or rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (MDR/RR-TB) require treatment with second-line treatment regimens, which are more complex than those used to treat patients without drug-resistant TB.. Treatment for MDR-TB Effective TB chemotherapy began in 1952 and since then strains of M tuberculosis have acquired resistance to various drugs compromising both treatment and control programmes. MDR and XDR-TB have emerged from inappropriate use of anti-TB medications, incorrect prescriptions, poor quality drugs and ending treatment.
